Resources  for Schools

This is an initiative of HBOC aimed at engaging schools and families in learning about birds. The webpage will be developed over several months during 2022 to include resources appropriate to the six stages of the NSW school curriculum. The impetus for the resources was provided in part by the recently introduced (in 2018) senior science subject, ‘Investigating Science’. The subject provides students, who are interested in pursuing science as a career, with opportunities to learn about scientific processes for testing ideas and gathering evidence.

The resources offered here are collectively called ‘Investigating Birds’ and provide opportunities to learn about Flight, Feathers, Speciation, Behaviour and Song while ‘doing science’. For senior students they support curriculum points in ‘Investigating Science’.  For younger students, the resources are appropriate to aspects of the primary and junior secondary science curriculum. Each resource will use examples of birds in the Hunter Region and highlight images captured by photographers, who are members of HBOC.

The first resources to be published are about flight. To access the resources, click the links in the table. Teachers, who would like to use the resources, are encouraged to contact the Education Co-ordinator of HBOC (education@hboc.org.au) if they have questions or feed-back about the resources. Copies of the worksheet data in Excel spreadsheet format can be provided on request. School visits can also be arranged to assist with the implementation of learning activities.
